WVSU Rolls Past D&E for 12th Straight Win in Series

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State's women's basketball team continued its recent surge and extended a pair of long-standing trends on Wednesday night, rolling to a 78–46 Mountain East Conference victory over Davis & Elkins inside the Walker Convocation Center.

The win marked West Virginia State's 12th straight victory over Davis & Elkins and its third win in the last four games overall this season. The Yellow Jackets have not lost to the Senators at home since Jan. 27, 2001, a 61–79 decision, extending the home streak in the series to 13 games. WVSU's last loss to D&E overall came on Feb. 15, 2020, an 81–93 setback in Elkins.

After a competitive opening quarter, West Virginia State began to separate in the second period, using defensive pressure and transition offense to take a 38–24 lead into halftime. The Yellow Jackets continued to build the margin after the break, outscoring the Senators 22–9 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

WVSU finished the night with a decisive advantage in the paint and on the glass, scoring 46 points in the paint and winning the rebounding battle 53–35. The Yellow Jackets also capitalized on turnovers, turning 27 Davis & Elkins miscues into 32 points while adding 28 fastbreak points.

Five Yellow Jackets reached double figures, led by Jessica Osuanah with 13 points in just 12 minutes. Imani Hickman and Latisha Parris followed with 12 points apiece, while Baylee Goins added 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Tiir Nyok posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Mikayla Smith also grabbed 10 boards.

Davis & Elkins was led by Briyanna Sapp with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jalia Garner added nine points off the bench. The Senators were held to 16-of-50 shooting from the field and just 3-of-10 from three-point range.
