INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — West Virginia State dropped both of its Saturday matches at the Indy Classic, falling to nationally ranked No. 13 Concordia–St. Paul in the morning and finally to host UIndy in the evening. The Yellow Jackets leave the event with a 1–2 overall record.
Alyssa Hill paced the Jackets with 9 kills and 3 digs against Concordia–St. Paul, while
Nicole Gartner Custodio added 10 kills on .316 hitting and 2 blocks. Setter
Emma Pomaret finished with 14 assists, 3 service aces, and 4 digs. Libero
Lilly Adkins anchored the defense with a team-high 15 digs. Carmen Perez chipped in 2 digs, and
Layane Lima da Conceicao contributed 6 digs. In the nightcap, Perez led the offense with 10 kills and 7 digs, Hill followed with 5 kills and 3 blocks, and Custodio added 4 kills with 3 blocks. Pomaret distributed 16 assists and picked up 10 digs, while Adkins again led the back row with 13 digs.
As a team against CSP, WVSU totaled 24 kills, hit .063, and added 3 service aces, 33 digs, and 5.0 total blocks. The Golden Bears countered with 46 kills at a .314 clip, 8 aces, and 7 blocks in a 25–23, 25–15, 25–11 sweep. In the UIndy match, the Jackets finished with 26 kills, 2 aces, 50 digs, and 5.0 blocks while hitting .063. The Greyhounds tallied 39 kills on .226 hitting with 9 aces and 6 blocks in a 25–15, 25–17, 25–14 victory.
The opening set against CSP was tightly contested before the Golden Bears edged out a 25–23 win. Concordia then controlled the second, 25–15, and closed the sweep with a decisive 25–11 third set. In the evening match, UIndy used a 7–1 run to break open the first set on the way to a 25–15 result, then carried steady momentum through a 25–17 second set. The Greyhounds sealed the sweep with a 6–1 surge late in the third to take it 25–14.
West Virginia State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 12, when it hosts Roberts Wesleyan at 10:00 a.m. in the Walker Convocation Center to open the WVSU–UC Crossover.
