WVSU Sweeps UC And Clinches MEC Tournament Birth

Institute, W. Va. -- West Virginia State swept the Sunday doubleheader with the University of Charleston to split the weekend series two games a piece. WVSU took game one of the doubleheader with a 4-1 win. State scored once in the opening frame on an error, and then broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run sixth inning. The Yellow Jackets drew two walks and were hit by three pitches in the decisive frame, with RBIs coming from Kyle Waters, Michael Bittinger, and Nathan Paulsen.

Hodges allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out nine over seven innings to improve to 3-5 on the season. Offensively, Guenther reached base three times with a hit and two walks, while Paulsen, Guenther, and Barnitz recorded the Yellow Jackets' three hits. WVSU improved to 26-21 overall and 16-13 in MEC play with the win.

In the second game, West Virginia State scored seven runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 9-5 win and complete the  Sunday sweep. Trailing 5-2 entering the final frame, the Yellow Jackets sent 11 men to the plate and collected seven hits in the inning. Ethyn Barnitz delivered the go-ahead blow with a three-run home run down the left-field line. Guenther and Fizer added RBI singles in the rally, while Paulsen, Waters, and Bittinger all reached safely.

State totaled 12 hits in the win, led by Aiden Paulsen's 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored and two doubles. Guenther finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Barnitz added three RBIs as well. Karson Frye earned the win in relief with a one-inning outing, while Brandon Morrison closed the game with a scoreless seventh.

Everything seemed to fall into place for the Yellow Jackets on Sunday, as Concord swept Glenville State in a doubleheader as well pushing WVSU into second place in the MEC South Division for the conference tournament.
