Yellow Jackets Can't Hold Off UC Late In Game 2, Losing Both In Doubleheader

Institute, W. Va. -- West Virginia State went right up the road to pay the University of Charleston Golden Eagles a visit.  Yellow Jackets dropped the opener in a 1-0 pitcher's duel. The Yellow Jackets were limited to one hit, a single by Sydney Shamblin in the fifth inning, while drawing five walks and striking out 13 times against UC's Addison Mass, who earned the complete-game win.

Autumn Hall threw six innings for WVSU, allowing one earned run on four hits with no walks or strikeouts. The decisive run came in the bottom of the fourth when Charleston's Brittny Ogg hit an RBI double to right center, scoring Hannah Meyer. WVSU left seven runners on base in the loss.

WVSU built an early lead in the nightcap but could not hold off a late push by Charleston, falling 6-5 in the second game of the doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the third inning, including RBI hits from Autumn Hall, Olivia Bell, Kylie Price, and Kaylee Byus, taking a 5-3 lead after three frames.

Charleston responded with two runs in the fifth to tie the game and added the go-ahead run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Bell had a triple and a double with two RBI to lead WVSU at the plate. Hall doubled and scored twice. Kaleigh Murphy took the loss after 5.1 innings pitched, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits.
