Institute, W. Va. --Â West Virginia State picked up a 2-1 victory over Davis & Elkins in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Nathan Paulsen drove in a run with an RBI single in the third inning and added a solo home run in the fifth to supply the offense for the Yellow Jackets. State finished with seven hits, including two from Paulsen and an RBI double from
Brodie Guenther. On the mound,
JT Fabian started with twoÂ
hitless innings, and
Cam Reed picked up the win with five innings of relief, allowing one unearned run while striking out two.
Davis & Elkins scored their only run in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a WVSU error and a wild pitch. The Senators managed five hits but left nine runners stranded. Cooper Blackburn took the loss despite throwing a complete game, striking out six and hitting two batters. West Virginia State left runners on base in key innings but held on defensively, turning back a seventh-inning threat to secure the win.
West Virginia State completed the sweep with a 5-0 shutout win in the second game.
Brian Lingenfelter tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out six and walking two to improve to 6-1 on the season.Â
WVSUÂ scored twice in the opening inning on a two-run double from
Brodie Guenther and then added three unearned runs in the sixth inning, aided by two Davis & Elkins errors. Nate Paulsen and
Michael Bittinger each recorded RBI singles during the sixth-inning rally.
Davis & Elkins struggled to generate offense, leaving six runners on base across eight innings. Starter David Reyes took the loss, giving up two earned runs across five innings before the Senators' bullpen allowed additional damage. State collected seven hits, including two apiece from
Kyle Waters and Guenther, to support Lingenfelter's dominant performance on the mound. With the sweep, West Virginia State improved to 23-19 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets look to extend a eight-game win-streak tomorrow with another doubleheader hosted by the Senators of Davis & Elkins. WVSU is currently sitting at second-place in the South Division of the MEC.
