Murphy Fires One-Hit Shutout as WVSU Splits Sunday Doubleheader

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State earned a doubleheader split on Sunday against Point Park, dropping the opener 7-2 before bouncing back for a 5-0 shutout in Game 2 behind a dominant pitching performance from Kaleigh Murphy.

Game One: Point Park 7, WVSU 2
In the opening game, Point Park struck early with two runs in the first and added insurance in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The Pioneers collected 11 hits overall, including two apiece from Melanie Taylor, Mia Arndt, and Emma Henry. Arndt and Bella Magliocco drove in a combined three runs, and Point Park capitalized on four WVSU errors. The Yellow Jackets scored once in the first inning on a defensive miscue and again in the sixth after Emma Pauley singled and later came around on a throwing error. Autumn Hall took the loss for WVSU, allowing five runs on nine hits in four innings.

Game Two: WVSU 5, Point Park 0
Game two was controlled from start to finish by WVSU. Murphy tossed a complete-game one-hitter with five strikeouts and five walks, facing just seven batters over the minimum. Offensively, State broke through in the second inning on a solo home run from Kylie Price and added runs in each of the next three frames. Emily Bechtel drove in two runs with a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the third and an RBI double in the fifth. Cassidy Cummings and Emma Pauley each added an RBI, while Sydney Shamblin collected two hits and a stolen base. WVSU totaled 10 hits in the win and committed no errors.

Up Next
The Yellow Jackets will head to the middle of the state to take on Davis & Elkins on Friday, April 18. The doubleheader begins with a 1:00 p.m. showdown against the Senators.
