Institute, W. Va. -- West Virginia State takes the weekend series with a 10-7 victory over Slippery Rock on Sunday at Cal Bailey Field. Slippery Rock took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly, a throwing error, and another sacrifice fly. Ethan Spolarich RBI single up the middle.
Both teams added a run in the third, and Slippery Rock tied the game in the fourth with a two-run home run by Michael Kitko. WVSU regained the lead later in the inning after a throwing error allowed two runs to score. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead in the seventh on a two-run home run by
Michael Bittinger.
Jared Nethercut pitched the final five innings in relief for WVSU, allowing one run on three hits while striking out two.
Brian Lingenfelter started for the Yellow Jackets, giving up six runs in 4.0 innings. Slippery Rock's Joe Purcell took the loss, allowing eight runs, three earned, over 3.1 innings.
Bittinger led WVSU with three hits and two RBIs, while
Connor Fizer added two hits and two runs scored. West Virginia State improved to 7-6 and will play West Liberty on Saturday, March 15, at 1:00 p.m.
