Kyle Waters and
Brandon Morrison were named as Co-Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week, presented by The Health Plan, respectively, the Mountain East Conference office announced Monday afternoon. Both players earned their first weekly award of the season after outstanding showings over the weekend with Waters showcasing his offensive and defensive prowess while Morrison closed three out of the four games on the bump.
Kyle Waters delivered a strong all-around performance this week, helping lead WVSU to a 3-1 record. In game one against Point Park on Sunday, Waters sparked the offense by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two singles, a double, and several key defensive plays that helped seal the 11-6 victory. He followed that up in game two with a clutch two-run homer—his second of the season—helping the Yellow Jackets secure an 8-5 win.
Against Salem on Saturday, Waters added a hit in each game, going 1-for-3 in the opener and 1-for-4 with a run scored in the comeback 7-6 win in game two. For the week, Waters batted .462 (6-for-13) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and a home run, while also making a major impact on defense.
Brandon Morrison was lights out on the mound this week, closing three straight wins for the Yellow Jackets and adding two more saves to his season total. Morrison picked up his third save of the year in game two against Salem, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits with no walks and retiring nine batters on only 31 pitches. He followed that with a perfect 1.0-inning save in game one against Point Park, needing just 10 pitches to retire the side. Morrison closed out game two against Point Park as well, working around a walk and recording three flyouts to earn his fourth save of the season.
For the week, Morrison threw 4.0 shutout innings over three appearances, giving up just 3 hits, walking one, and striking out one while facing 16 batters. He was efficient, composed, and dominant in high-leverage situations, helping secure three crucial wins for WVSU.
