WVSU Drops Game One, Rallies in Game Two to Split With Wheeling

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Baseball worked a hard earned split with Wheeling on Saturday at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets were blown out in game one, 15-2, but then made a two-out, bottom-of-the-seventh rally to tie game two before eventually walking it off in extra innings.

Game One: WVSU 2, Wheeling 15

Wheeling took control early in the first game, scoring 10 runs in the second inning. Brett Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and an RBI, while Cade Lacy led the Cardinals with four RBIs. Spencer Craig and Christian Boyles each added two RBIs. Wheeling capitalized on six walks and two hit batters in the second inning to take a commanding lead.

West Virginia State managed just three hits in the game. The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the fifth, with a passed ball allowing Nathan Paulsen to score and a Kyle Waters RBI single driving in Ethan Spolarich.

Wes Landis (1-1) earned the win for Wheeling, allowing two runs on three hits over six innings while striking out four. Zane Loveday (0-3) took the loss, giving up six runs in one inning.

Game Two: WVSU 5, Wheeling 4 (8 innings)

Wheeling struck first with two runs in the first inning. Nicholas Ancelet drove in Brett Johnson on a groundout, and Nicholas Schulz followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Cardinals added another run in the seventh on a Craig RBI single, extending the lead to 3-0.

West Virginia State responded in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Charlie McGuiness reached on an error, putting a runner in scoring position. Ethyn Barnitz followed with an RBI single to center, scoring McGuiness for the Yellow Jackets' first run. Nate Bittinger came in to pinch run and scored on a Kyle Waters double. Brodie Guenther then singled down the left-field line, driving in Waters to tie the game at 3-3.

Wheeling regained the lead in the eighth when Ference drove in Johnson with a single through the left side, giving the Cardinals a 4-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth, West Virginia State capitalized on shaky Wheeling pitching. Aidan Paulsen drew a walk, and Nathan Paulsen followed with a single to center. Spolarich worked a walk to load the bases. After a strikeout, Karson Frye came through with a two-run, walk-off single through the right side, scoring Aidan and Nathan Paulsen to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 victory.

Brandon Morrison (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one run over 1.2 innings. Brock Elliott (1-1) took the loss for Wheeling.
