Yellowjackets Fall Short In Doubleheader To Malone Pioneers

Institute, W. Va. --  The Yellowjackets hosted a doubleheader with the Malone Pioneers, falling short in both contests. Malone opened the scoring in the top of the first when Baum drew a walk and advanced to third on a Munoz double, followed by Ryan's two-RBI double. West Virginia State's only run came in the bottom of that same inning when Waters reached on a walk and Fizer's hit‐by‐pitch drove him in. In the third, Malone's offense exploded: Ryan's home run, a single by Barker, a walk by Stevens and extra‐base hits by Munoz and Roberts pushed the tally to 10. West Virginia State's pitchers held the opposition scoreless in innings four through seven, though the Yellowjackets were never able to add to the scoreboard concluding the contest at 10-1 in favor of Malone.

A little later on in the second bout, Malone's opening frame produced one unearned-run after Ryan reached on an error and Stevens' double drove him in. The next frame, Malone's batters generated five runs, punctuated by Flohr's single and steal, Bartiromo's single, and a couple of hit‐by‐pitches that allowed a few runners to score. West Virginia State responded in the second by posting a run on a double by Buysee that scored Overaitis. The teams traded scoreless frames in the third and fourth, and although West Virginia State's offense produced two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth—in part fueled by Overaitis' home run—the top of the seventh saw Malone add three more runs, sealing a 9–4 win. West Virginia State's effort kept the contest competitive through several innings even as Malone's timely hitting ultimately proved too much.

West Virginia State hopes to redeem themselves and get even with two more opportunities at the Pioneers at Shawnee Sports Complex February 24 at noon.
