State wins fourth straight with run-away victory over Point Park

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State increased their winning streak to four games, claiming a 31-point victory over the Point Park Pioneers, 90-59, inside the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets shot their second-best field goal percentage of the season at 43 percent. State also gathered 48 rebounds and 19 steals.

WVSU improves to 12-11 on the season, 7-9 in the Mountain East. The Pioneers fall to 7-15, 5-11 in the MEC.

State had four players in double figures, led by Baylee Goins with 16 points, draining four treys. Ashley Kerekes and Hallie Bailey each contributed 14 points. Kerekes also grabbed five boards, four on the offensive end, and two steals. Bailey grabbed four rebounds, dished three assists and caused three turnovers. Latisha Parris added 11 points and six boards.

Alexis Giles led all scorers for the Pioneers with 22 points.

West Virginia State set the pace early, building a 13-point lead midway through the first period. WVSU capitalized on turnovers, converting 12 points off Point Park's mistakes. Parris hit a fast-break three-pointer to push the lead to 16-5 at the 4:57 mark. Emma Pavelek responded for Point Park with a layup to cut the deficit to 10, but Bailey added a fast-break layup to stretch the lead again. Goins contributed five points, including a three-pointer, helping WVSU close the quarter with a 24-17 advantage. Point Park's Giles scored seven points, including a three-pointer, to keep the visitors within striking distance.

WVSU's defense continued to pressure Point Park in the second quarter, holding them to 29.4% shooting from the field. Kerekes and Bailey led the way offensively for the Yellow Jackets, combining for 10 points. WVSU extended its lead to 14 points at halftime, finishing the half with a 43-29 edge. Point Park's offense struggled to find consistency, managing only two three-pointers in the quarter. West Virginia State controlled the boards, out-rebounding Point Park 12-5.

West Virginia State maintained its momentum in the third quarter, with Emily Anthony and Goins combining for seven points early on. The Yellow Jackets stretched their lead to 19 after Goins hit her second three-pointer of the night. Point Park's Giles added a layup and a pair of free throws, but WVSU's transition game proved too much for the visitors to handle. The Yellow Jackets closed the period ahead 61-42.

WVSU sealed the win with a dominant fourth-quarter performance, outscoring Point Park 29-17. The Yellow Jackets shot 60% from the field, with Kerekes and Goins each adding key buckets. The biggest lead of the game, 32 points, came with 2:25 remaining after a fast-break layup by Goins. Point Park's Emma Pavelek and Giles added late baskets, but the game was well out of reach.

WVSU will compete in their final non-conference game of the regular season as they travel to Salem on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2:00 p.m.
