BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- West Virginia State women's basketball set a new season benchmark in both field goal shooting and long range shooting enroute to a wire-to-wire victory over non-conference opponent Bluefield State on Monday night. The Yellow Jackets hit 44 percent of their field goals (28-of-63) and 41 percent on their treys (14-of-34).
WVSU improves to 11-11 overall and stands pat at 6-9 in the Mountain East. The Big Blues drop to 9-15, 2-10 in the CIAA.
Shanley Woods hit 6-of-11 three pointers to drop 20 points for State's cause and added three steals and a pair of rebounds.
ZZ Russell contributed 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals while
Latisha Parris shot 5-of-6 from the field, adding 10 points.
Bluefield State's Jasmine Jenkins led all scorers with 22 points.
WVSU started the first up 5-0, then hit their stride with a 19-2 run that lasted most of the quarter, capped by
Hallie Bailey going 1-for-2 at the charity stripe. A pair of
Baylee Goins foul shots put State up 26-9 after 10 minutes.
Each team added 25 points to their total in the second quarter, with Woods stroking two of her six treys in the frame, her last coming with just under four minutes to play. State shot a game best 62.5 percent (10-of-16) in the period. Despite the sharpshooting, the 17 point lead for WVSU remained intact at the break.
Both teams' offense faltered somewhat in the third period with WVSU only managing nine points while Bluefield only eeked out 11 points. Russel's trey at the 2:25 mark were the final points WVSU scored in the quarter, putting State up by 19 at the time, 60-41. Bluefield State added four foul shots after the Russel field goal to trim the lead to 15, 60-45 with 10 minutes to play.
Balanced scoring for the Yellow Jackets in the final frame helped the State cause with six different scorers contributing points extending the lead to 23 with a Goins trey with a half-minute to play. BSU's Jenkins added a layup on their final possession for the final score.
WVSU returns home to welcome Point Park into the Walker Convocation Center on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
