Home Sweep Home! Jackets Complete Derby Double Over UC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University completed a season sweep of crosstown rival Charleston for just the second time in program history, edging the Golden Eagles 2–1 in Wednesday night's Kanawha River Derby at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (14–3–1, 13–1–1 MEC) rallied after conceding an early own goal in the sixth minute. Senior forward Rachel Okoro leveled the match in the 26th minute with her eighth goal of the season, finishing a well-worked sequence from Laura Pouedras and Alexia Bru Garcia. Just under three minutes later, Sara Paris Filter calmly buried a penalty to give State a 2–1 lead it would not relinquish.

The second half saw WVSU control possession and tempo, limiting Charleston to just a single shot while closing out the match behind a composed back line anchored by Poppy Bastock.

West Virginia State finished with an 10–6 edge in total shots, including 8–4 on target. WVSU earned three corner kicks (all in the second half), while UC earned a single corner set-piece in the first half. Bastock recorded four saves in the win.

The victory marked WVSU's fourth straight in the rivalry and just the second all-time season sweep, joining the 2022 campaign.

Up next, West Virginia State will host No. 4 seed West Liberty in the Mountain East Conference quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.
