Three different goal scorers power State past Point Park

PITTSBURGH, Penn. -- West Virginia State maintained their position atop the MEC South with a 4-1 victory over Point Park at Highmark Stadium on Wednesday evening. State had three different Yellow Jackets put the ball in the back of the net, and was aided by a Pioneer own goal in the second half. State improves to 7-3, 7-1 in the Mountain East. Point Park falls to 5-4-1, 4-3 in MEC play.

Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz, Ece Lea Evin, and Rachel Okoro all netted goals for State with Okoro and Diaz's goals coming on their only shot of the match, While Evin sent four shots toward goal, two found the target and one was saved. Laura Pouedras notched a pair of assists while Alexia Bru Garcia had one helper. Goalkeeper Poppy Bastock was test four times, and made three saves.

WVSU's first goal came in the 25th minute with a Garcia and Pouedras designed play off of a corner kick. They found the head of Diaz who promptly struck it past the goalkeeper to put the away team up 1-0.

A Point Park penalty kick was called on a WVSU handball almost immediately after the WVSU goal. The Pioneers converted in the 28th minute to tie the score back up.

Evin scored her third goal of the season in the 38th minute with Pouedras helping for a second time. Less than five minutes later, Rachel Okoro (who entered for the first time this season shortly before) fired an absolute missle toward goal at point blank range for an insurance goal just before halftime.

Point Park would help WVSU's line score with an own goal in the 62nd minute, the only goal of the second half for the final score.

WVSU takes control of the Mountain East with 21 points. No other team has more than 13 points in the conference standings as of the time of writing.

WVSU returns home to square off with the West Liberty Hilltoppers on Sunday, Oct. 7th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium in Institute.
