FAIRMONT, W.Va. — West Virginia State women's soccer (6–3–0, 6–1–0 MEC) spoiled Fairmont State's unbeaten run Sunday with a 3–2 victory at Duvall-Rosier Field. Senior forward
Leila Karam recorded her second career hat trick — and first of the season — to lead the Yellow Jackets past the previously undefeated Falcons.
State converted three of its five total shots in a ruthlessly efficient performance, with Karam scoring on all three of her attempts. Her clinical finishing touch, paired with strong goalkeeping from
Poppy Bastock, who made five saves, proved the difference. Fairmont State (6–1–1, 4–1–1 MEC) outshot WVSU 13–5 and held a 6–1 advantage in corners, but State's early surge set the tone. Sara París Fílter notched two assists, while Hannah Aneley Nuñez Perreira added another.
The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead quickly with two goals from Karam in the opening 11 minutes, both assisted by París Fílter. Fairmont clawed one back on a Valentina Gianinetto penalty kick in the 54th minute, but Karam completed her hat trick less than six minutes later off a feed from Nuñez Perreira. The hosts cut it to 3–2 late on Montserrat Diaz's strike in the 87th minute, yet WVSU's back line held firm to secure the statement road win.
WVSU will continue its road trip on Wednesday, Oct. 8 with a trip to Pittsburgh, Penn. to tangle with the Point Park Pioneers. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
