DUNBAR, W.Va. — West Virginia State (6-8, 1-2 MEC) delivered its cleanest offensive performance of the season Friday night, committing just nine attack errors in a 25-15, 25-10, 25-16 sweep of Davis & Elkins (0-13, 0-3 MEC) at the Walker Convocation Center. The error total marked a season low, bettering the 11 miscues against Kentucky Wesleyan last month.
The Yellow Jackets hit .283 as a team with 37 kills, 33 assists, 56 digs and seven aces while controlling the pace from start to finish.
Alyssa Hill led the way with 11 kills on a .455 clip and four block assists for 13 points. Hill currently ranks sixth in the Mountain East Conference in both points (3.45 per set) and kills (3.11 per set).
Nicole Gartner Custodio was a force at the net with five kills and six block assists, adding to her league-leading 1.3 blocks per set and .312 hitting percentage, third-best in the MEC. Carmen Perez chipped in seven kills, 12 digs and two aces, while setter Kelsey McKeehan dished out 23 assists with nine digs. Libero
Lilly Adkins steadied the back row with 18 digs and four aces.
WVSU's offense clicked early, with Adkins' serving run and a pair of Hill kills fueling a 10–1 burst in the first set. The Jackets never relented, finishing the frame 25–15. In set two, State swung .323 with just three errors while using back-to-back Perez and Custodio blocks to ignite a decisive run in a 25–10 victory. The third set saw Davis & Elkins hang close in the early rallies, but the Jackets' efficiency wore the Senators down, as Hill, Perez and Custodio combined for nine kills to lock up the 25–16 clincher.
West Virginia State next heads to Glenville, W.Va., to face Glenville State on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. inside the Waco Center.
