CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Junior outside hitter Carmen Perez recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 19 digs, but West Virginia State fell to Charleston (WV) 3-1 (25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22) Tuesday evening inside the Wehrle Innovation Center .
Perez paced the Yellow Jackets' attack, hitting .186 on 59 swings while adding three aces and a block assist.
Alyssa Hill followed with nine kills and four blocks, while
Baylee Smith chipped in seven kills (.313). Kelsey McKeehan handed out 40 assists and notched seven digs, and
Lilly Adkins contributed 15 digs and three assists from the back row .
As a team, WVSU finished with 55 kills, 50 assists, 81 digs and eight total blocks, hitting .144 for the match. Charleston countered with 52 kills, 50 assists, 86 digs and 13 blocks, swinging .198 overall .
The Yellow Jackets edged out the opening set 27-25 after back-to-back kills by Perez and
Giatta Iquinto, but the Golden Eagles rallied to take the next three frames, closing each with late runs powered by setter Abby Avila and hitter Divine Muo.
West Virginia State (7-10, 2-4 MEC) heads to Fairmont for a Friday matchup against the Fighting Falcons inside Joe Retton Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
