ATHENS, W.Va. — West Virginia State pushed Concord to four sets but came up short, 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19), on Tuesday night at the Carter Center. The loss snapped a 15-match winning streak for the Yellow Jackets against the Mountain Lions, their first defeat in the series since 2017.
The Yellow Jackets dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain East Conference, while the Mountain Lions improved to 12-1 and 2-0 in league play.
Senior outside hitter Carmen Perez led State with 12 kills and 14 digs, while middle blocker
Nicole Gartner Custodio added eight kills and four blocks. Sophomore
Marcelina Pyka chipped in nine kills with four blocks, and setter
Emma Pomaret guided the offense with 26 assists. Libero
Lilly Adkins anchored the back row with a match-high 22 digs.
As a team, West Virginia State finished with 49 kills, 46 assists, 78 digs and 11.0 total blocks, hitting .159 for the match. Concord countered with 51 kills, 47 assists and 70 digs, swinging .155 overall.
Concord grabbed control early with tight 25-22 wins in both the first and second sets. State fought back in the third, hitting .333 and pulling away late for a 25-18 victory to extend the match. The Mountain Lions responded in the fourth, using a balanced attack to close out the contest, 25-19.
