West Virginia State Holds Concord to a Scoreless Draw in Defensive Showdown

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University and Concord University battled to a hard-fought 0-0 draw Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference matchup at Dickerson Stadium. Both teams displayed exceptional defensive resilience, with neither side able to capitalize on their offensive opportunities.

From the outset, it was clear that this would be a defensive clash. Concord (1-2-1, 1-0-1 MEC) controlled much of the early possession and earned five corner kicks in the first half, putting consistent pressure on the WVSU defense. However, the Yellow Jackets' backline, anchored by goalkeeper Laura Galindo, stood firm. Galindo finished the night with four saves, including a crucial stop on a low shot from Concord's Leah Fleming in the 39th minute.

WVSU (1-1-2, 1-0-1 MEC) struggled to generate offensive momentum in the first half, managing only one shot. Their best chance came in the 17th minute when Ellise Rennie fired State's only shot on target of the night, but Concord's goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough was quick to react, making the save to keep the match level.

The second half saw both teams pushing for a breakthrough. WVSU improved their attack, registering four shots. Despite increased pressure, neither team could find the back of the net. Concord's Tiana Campbell was particularly dangerous, taking four shots, two of which were on goal, but Galindo remained impenetrable between the pipes.

Despite failing to secure the win, the Yellow Jackets extended their unbeaten streak to three games and will look to build on this momentum when they host West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at Dickerson Stadium.
