INDIANA, Penn. -- West Virginia State fell in three sets to Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday, as the Yellow Jackets struggled to keep pace with the Crimson Hawks, who claimed the match 25-20, 25-22, 25-12. The loss drops WVSU to 0-5 on the season while IUP advances to 4-2.
Set 1: Indiana (PA) 25, WVSU 20
In the opening set, West Virginia State came out strong, keeping pace with Indiana through multiple lead changes. Nicole Custodio provided a spark with key kills, while
Kiersten Eggleton set the tone with her assists. However, the Crimson Hawks surged late, taking advantage of WVSU's attack errors and closing out the set 25-20. Despite the loss, Custodio's four kills in the set highlighted the Yellow Jackets' offensive efforts.
Set 2: Indiana (PA) 25, WVSU 22
The second set was tightly contested, with WVSU showing resilience after falling behind early. The Yellow Jackets fought back to tie the game at multiple points, with
Alyssa Hill and
Gabrielle Elliott chipping in with timely kills. A late push by Indiana proved too much, though, as they sealed the set 25-22, despite WVSU's strong blocking and defensive effort.
Set 3: Indiana (PA) 25, WVSU 12
Indiana (PA) took full control in the final set, with a dominant performance that left little room for a WVSU comeback. The Crimson Hawks jumped to an early lead and never looked back, taking advantage of West Virginia State's miscues and errors. Despite Custodio and Eggleton's efforts, the Yellow Jackets couldn't regain their footing, ultimately dropping the set 25-12.
Custodio finished the match with a team-high 11 kills, while Eggleton contributed 16 assists and eight digs.
WVSU will continue to look for their first win of the season as they take on Lock Haven later today at 3:00 p.m.
