Yellow Jackets cruise past Frostburg on way to winners' bracket

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Mountain East Conference Pitcher of the Year Chris Morris threw nearly 150 pitches in a nine-inning complete game performance as West Virginia State toppled the No. 1 seed in the North Division, Frostburg State, by a final score of 8-1 in the second game of the 2024 MEC Baseball Tournament at GoMart Ballpark on Wednesday night.

The Yellow Jackets caused the first upset of the MEC Tournament and did so in dominant fashion. Morris (8-2) shook off his last outing and proved how deserving he was of the league's highest honor for a pitcher. He only gave up six hits, with just one going for extra bases, while sitting down nine Bobcats. His one run allowed did not come until the eighth inning.

Meanwhile, his teammates gave him more run support than he needed. WVSU put up four runs in the top of the second. Ethan Spolarich drove in the first run of the night with an RBI-double. Michael Bittinger's sacrifice fly resulted in the second run being scored. A fielding error by Frostburg's first baseman allowed the third run to come across and extended the inning. Nathan Paulsen then made the Bobcats pay with another RBI-double, sending his brother Aidan Paulsen home, 4-0.

West Virginia State tacked one run onto its lead in the fourth inning. A single to right field by Kyle Waters allowed Bittinger to score from second base, 5-0.

In the seventh inning, WVSU added three more runs to threaten the 10-run rule coming into effect. A total of five walks were drawn by the Yellow Jackets. The last three bases on balls of the half inning were with the bases loaded, 8-0.

Frostburg ended the shutout by Morris in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI-single, 8-1. He left two base runners stranded in the inning to keep the Bobcats at bay.

In the bottom of the ninth, Morris retired the side in order to excite the crowd and put an exclamation point on his complete game. He struck out two of the final three batters.

West Virginia State will play on Friday, May 10 next in the 3:30 p.m. time slot. The Yellow Jackets will face the winner of the Fairmont versus Glenville matchup tomorrow. The Falcons and the Pioneers earned the No. 2 seeds of their respective divisions.
