Yellow Jackets fall to No. 24 Charleston in title game of MEC Tournament

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (31-20) fell to No. 24 Charleston (43-8) by a final score of 17-4 in the championship game of the MEC Tournament on Sunday afternoon at GoMart Ballpark. The Yellow Jackets were hopeful after taking a 4-0 lead through 1.5 innings, but Charleston's bats and fresh arms ultimately won out.

State scored first with three runs put up in the top of the first. Mike Huber reached home from second base on an infield fly to the shortstop that hit the turf, 1-0. Then, with Nathan Paulsen standing on second, Chris Morris belted a home run to right center, 3-0.

In the top of the second, Kyle Waters lifted the Yellow Jackets to a 4-0 lead with a solo shot to dead center.

The momentum started to shift in the bottom of the second. Charleston's Eric Chartier juiced his team up with a three-run rocket that curled around the foul pole in left field, 4-3.

The lead changed in the bottom of the third. UC plated seven runs to put WVSU six runs in the hole, 10-4. Three consecutive singles scored one run each before the Golden Eagles launched another three-run homer. The last run of the inning was driven in with a ground-rule double.

Charleston tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth with another RBI-double, 11-4. UC then added six runs to their tally in the sixth inning, 17-4. The 10-run rule was enacted after State left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.

Michael Bittinger, Mike Huber, Chris Morris and Tyler Overaitis were named to the All-Tournament team in the postgame ceremony.
