WVSU survives Frostburg on Friday to stay alive in the MEC Tournament

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia State baseball (30-19) faced elimination from the MEC Tournament up against the No. 1 seed in the North Division, Frostburg State (37-14), on Friday night. Despite having to play back-to-back nine-inning games, the Yellow Jackets came from behind to knock off the Bobcats, 4-2, and stay alive in the tournament.

Frostburg was first to score in the top of the second. With runners on first and second, an infield single was enough to get one run across, 1-0.

State changed the lead in the next half inning. Connor Fizer drove in the tying run with a single into left field. The go-ahead run was scored by Chris Morris. Michael Bittinger hit a fly ball to shallow center field. Morris threatened to tag up from third base and broke for home when Frostburg's center fielder overthrew the catcher, 2-1.

The Bobcats equalized in the bottom of the fourth. Frostburg's Cy Probst batted in the tying run with a single to left field, 2-2. State's starting pitcher, Colin Bryant, was left with runners on the corners with one out. He got out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop out.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Fizer stepped up to the plate. With a 2-1 count, he turned on the pitch and launched the ball up against the highest part of the wall in right field. Initially, it was ruled a grand slam before being overturned to a ground-rule double. Nevertheless, two runs scored to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-2 lead going into the eighth inning.

Bryant threw his 136th pitch to get out of the eighth inning with a line out to third base. The score remained the same going into the top of the ninth. Bryant made way for Caleb Lafunor. Lafunor retired the side in order with a pair of ground outs and a strike out to end the game.

State will play the loser of the Charleston and Fairmont matchup tomorrow. That game will take place at 1 p.m. before State's 4:30 p.m. contest against the loser.
