BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team swept the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats with a pair of 2-0 victories at Culpepper Field. It's the first time State has swept the Bobcats since 2019.

WVSU: 18-19, 10-8 MEC
WVWC: 12-23, 3-15 MEC
Game One: WVSU 2, WVWC 0
The first game of Monday's doubleheader was a pitcher's duel between Autumn Thompson for the Yellow Jackets and Josi Fix for Wesleyan. State drew first blood but it took all the way until the sixth inning before the first run of the game was scored. Kerigan Moore singled to lead off the inning. Thompson then ripped a fly ball to left field for her second sacrifice fly of the season, 1-0.
The Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Cassidy Cummings knocked in Addi Dillow after reaching first base on an error, 2-0.
The Bobcats got their leadoff hitter aboard after WVSU's lone error, but the next three hitters went down in order, sealing the game one victory and giving Thompson her fifth straight victory in the circle.
Game Two: WVSU 2, WVWC 0
The second game in the doubleheader saw State's Kaleigh Murphy get her seventh start in the circle while Wesleyan gave Kendall Stoffel the nod.
Wesleyan nearly opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, but Stoffel was thrown out at home with Kristabelle Carte firing to Jayde Baron for the third out of the inning. After State went down in order in the top of the third, the Bobcats again had a runner 60 feet from home plate with two out, but Murphy induced a ground out to get out of the jam.
In the top of the fifth, WVSU juiced the bases with Carte singling, Moore walking and Clark singling. A strike out and a ground out later though, and State stranded all three runners.
Avery Contreras hit a lead-off, pinch-hit double in the top of the seventh then was replaced by Sydney Shamblin. Shamblin got to third after a wild pitch. Moore earned a walk on a 3-2 pitch, but instead of stopping at first, she took off for second and was safe at second, but that opened a window for Shamblin to break the deadlock, and she dove outside of the swipe tag attempt by the catcher and put WVSU up 1-0. Moore tried to steal third on the throw home, but was thrown out. Emele Clark boarded on an error and was brought home on an RBI sacrifice by Thompson, her second of the series, 2-0.
Wesleyan got a lead-off hit in the bottom of the seventh, but State slammed the door with two groundouts and a pop out, sweeping the Bobcats. Murphy picked up her fourth win of the season.
