Game Recap: Softball | | Bryan Shepherd, Assistant Sports Information Director

WVSU softball wins game one despite getting no-hit; falls in game two to Glenville St.

INSTITUTE, W.Va – West Virginia State's softball team won a pitcher's duel game one against Glenville State, but then dropped the back half of Saturday's doubleheader to the Pioneers. Defensive errors in both games helped the winning team in each game.

Post Game Records
WVSU: 15-18, 7-7 MEC
Glenville State: 10-15, 4-10 MEC

Game 1 - WVSU 1, Glenville State 0
WVSU's first time facing Glenville State ace Holly Brehm worked out less than ideal with seven Yellow Jackets striking out and just two earning free passes via balls. The second walk was to Avery Contreras in the third inning who was erased on a fielder's choice by Emele Clark. On the first pitch to Chelsea Thompson, Clark took off for second base. The throw from the catcher went all the way to the fence giving Clark her team-leading 27th stolen base of the season, and allowing her to score. Clark is now one steal away from tying the single-season record. Thompson ended up striking out to end the inning.

WVSU wouldn't get a hit in the entire game, but despite giving up five hits of their own, and having runners on third in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, the Pioneers were unable to get the final 60 feet, giving WVSU the rare reverse no-hit victory.

Autumn Thompson picked up her eighth win of the season, striking out five. Brehm for Glenville State fell to 5-6 on the season, striking out 13 with two walks.

Game 2 - WVSU 2, Glenville State 5
Glenville State struck in the top of the first inning with a come-back single. The batter was eventually put out on a rundown to end the inning, but not before the runner on third scored.

GSU had bases loaded in the top of the third inning after three consecutive three-up three-down half innings, but Kaleigh Murphy was able to get out of the jam with no damage done with a fielder's choice at home plate and a lineout back to Murphy. After being responsible for the lone run in the first game, Clark hit a sharp shot into left field that the left fielder dove for and missed. The ball went all the way to the corner allowing Clark to pick up her second career four-bagger, both of which have been inside the park. Jayde Baron also scored on the hit.

A two error top of the fifth for State allowed Glenville to recapture the lead with a three-spot. A solo home run for the Pioneers in the top of the sixth completed the scoring.
