Women's Basketball staves off late Cardinals run

WHEELING, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's basketball team avenged their overtime loss to the Cardinals earlier this season with a 73-65 victory over the Wheeling Cardinals on Saturday in Wheeling. The Yellow Jackets hit 25-of-34 free throws, including 14-of-19 in the fourth quarter. 

WVSU advances their record to 12-8 overall, 8-5 in the Mountain East. Wheeling falls to 14-7, 9-4 in the MEC.

WVSU's Anysa Jordan led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, six rebounds, and three blocks. ZZ Russell contributed 13 points, including 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Russell also gathered six rebounds. Hannah Shriver scored 10 points with six rebounds and three assists.

Wheeling's Jacqui Hinesmon paced the Cardinals with 14 points.

Wheeling scored six of the first eight points of the contest, taking a 6-2 lead with 7:03 showing on the clock. The Cardinals then went cold from the field missing their next six shots which resulted in a drought that lasted almost three-and-a-half minutes. WVSU, hit three of their four shots during the span, going on a 10-0 run capped by a Hallie Bailey trey. State scored five to Wheeling's four points to close the quarter. State led 17-10 after 10 minutes.

ZZ Russell hit a trey with 8:39 to play to open the second quarter scoring for the Yellow Jackets. Wheeling trimmed the lead to three points after an 8-0 run. Anysa Jordan's trey ended the Wheeling run, and kicked off a 12-2 run for the Yellow Jackets. State forced all three of Wheeling's turnovers over the span of 2:22. Wheeling got one point back as the Cardinals scored six points the State's five through the closing moments of the half. 

It was State's turn to go cold from the field in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets hit three field goals in the third. Hannah Shriver scored a jumper 15 seconds into the frame, Shelby Harmeyer canned a trey at 9:22 and Anysa Jordan hit a layup at 6:22. WVSU was up by 19 at that point, 47-28. WVSU hit four free throws over the next two minutes to take their largest lead of the game to that point, 51-30. State didn't score again in the third. Wheeling went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, but only scored one additional field goal. It was 51-38 after 30 minutes. 

Hannah Shriver hit a layup early in the quarter to end the Yellow Jackets drought. The two teams traded a pair of buckets, but WVSU again hit a dry spell from the field for nearly four-and-a-half minutes. State went 3-for-3 from the line, to outscore the Cardinals 7-6 over that span. Wheeling closed the gap in the waning moments of the game, hitting 3-of-3 from the field and 3-of-5 from the line, with State's only points coming from four foul shots. Wheeling started fouling the Yellow Jackets but State was able to hold them off with 6-of-8 foul shooting.

West Virginia State will travel to Frostburg State on Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. showdown against the Bobcats.
