State wins crucial game at Frostburg with third quarter breakaway

FROSTBURG, Md. – West Virginia State women's basketball (13-8, 9-5 MEC) won its third-straight game against Frostburg State (12-9, 9-5 MEC) by a final score of 107-88 on Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena. The Yellow Jackets shook up the league standings with the important victory and now sit in a three-way tie for second place with the Bobcats and UC.

Anysa Jordan matched her season-high of 21 points by shooting 8-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Shelby Harmeyer also matched a season-high of six three-pointers made on her way to 18 points. Destiny Fields was not far behind with 17 points to go along with five rebounds. Hallie Bailey (11 points), ZZ Russell (10 points) and Ashley Kerekes (10 points) made it six Yellow Jackets scoring in double-digits on the night.

Frostburg went up 6-0 in the opening three minutes before the Yellow Jackets scored eight unanswered to take the lead around the six-minute mark. ZZ Russell knocked down a trey and a jumper. Hallie Bailey completed a three-point play in between.

The Bobcats then regained the lead and went up by three, 15-12, on the other side of the three-minute mark. West Virginia State responded with a 13-4 run to close out the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets shot 4-of-5 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line during the two-minute span. They ended up with a six-point advantage, 25-19, at the conclusion of the first period.

The first half of the second quarter was played close to even. Frostburg was able to cut West Virginia State's lead to four points, 40-36, by the media timeout but the Yellow Jackets made shots in critical moments to keep the lead. They made three shots from behind the arc in the first three minutes of the second period before they kissed three layups off the glass over the next two minutes.

After the commercial timeout, the Bobcats pulled back to within one point, 44-43, of WVSU with 2:27 remaining in the first half. Destiny Fields kept the lead from changing hands by draining a three-pointer before Imani Reid nailed a jumper to put State up by six. In the closing seconds of the opening half, Frostburg's Maggie Sharp made a three-point bucket to leave the Yellow Jackets with a three-point lead, 49-46, at halftime.

West Virginia State finally gained a sizable lead in the third quarter with a 21-5 run that occurred between the nine- and five-minute marks. Ashley Kerekes and Emyah Fortenberry led the charge with a combined 11 points. The Yellow Jackets shot 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range while causing five turnovers to go up by 17 points, 72-55.

Baskets were traded for the remainder of the third stanza to maintain State's 17-point cushion, 83-66, going into the fourth quarter.

Frostburg never came close to catching back up with the momentum-holding Yellow Jackets in the final period. WVSU eclipsed the century mark, 102-81, when Fields connected on a triple with 3:15 to go in the game. The 107 points scored by WVSU was the highest total for the team against a MEC opponent this season.

West Virginia State made an impressive 48 percent of their shots from behind the arc to rack up the points.

The Yellow Jackets will have another chance to knock a team down a notch when they host Fairmont State on Saturday, Feb. 10 for a 2 p.m. tussle next.
