Men's Basketball breaks three-point school record in 118-71 win over Wesleyan

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (18-7, 13-5 MEC) defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (2-24, 1-17 MEC) by a final score of 118-71 on Saturday at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets broke the school record of three-point field goals made in a game by draining 22 against the Bobcats.

Miguel Martinez was the game's leading scorer with 24 points. He shot 5-of-7 from three-point land. Kalil Camara was not far behind with a season-high 20 points. He made a season-best six shots from three-point range. Nate Mims (17 points), Anthony Pittman (14 points) and Mahzi Thames (10 points) were also top contributors for WVSU.

State opened the game on a 19-6 run and never looked back. Martinez posted seven points during the six-minute stretch. He knocked down a jumper, hit his first trey of the contest and banked a layup.

The Bobcats pulled back to within nine points, 26-17, with 7:27 left in the first half. The little bit of momentum gained by Wesleyan ended there.

The Yellow Jackets made eight shots from behind the arc in the time that remained until halftime. Camara banked three triples in a row at one point. The flurry of threes by WVSU made up a 30-9 run that gave State a 30-point advantage, 56-26, at the break.

The Yellow Jackets outscored the Bobcats by a 25-13 margin between the start of the second half and the first commercial timeout. Martinez and Mims scored eight points each to lead the charge. State held a staggering 42-point lead, 81-39, when the timeout was called.

WVSU put three digits on the scoreboard with 7:20 remaining in the contest after back-to-back treys from Antonio Carter and Kahari Rogers.

Rogers hit another trey with 3:19 left to tie the previous team record of 19 three-point field goals made in a game.

Ethan Taylor's three-pointer broke the record at the 2:27-mark in the second half. DeAngelo Fogle drained the next three-point bucket around the two-minute mark. Taylor made one last triple in the closing seconds to set the new benchmark of 22 three-point field goals made.

The Yellow Jackets shot 58 percent from the floor, 54 percent from three-point range and made 100 percent of their free throws. They never trailed for the entire 40 minutes.

State will travel to Concord (20-5, 13-5 MEC) on Wednesday, Feb. 28 for a 7:30 p.m. clash next. Seeding for the MEC Tournament is on the line. The Mountain Lions and the Yellow Jackets are currently tied for third place in the league standings.
