Men's basketball returns to win column with 96-83 victory over Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. — West Virginia State men's basketball delivered a 96-83 road victory over Frostburg State on Saturday at Bobcat Arena, showcasing their offensive prowess and depth in the Mountain East Conference clash.

The Yellow Jackets (4-3, 2-2 MEC) set the tone early, amassing a 53-41 lead by halftime, thanks to their efficiency in the paint, where they outscored the Bobcats 56-44. Sophomore guard Jae Slack, starting for WVSU, led the charge with 17 points, including one three-pointer. Miguel Martinez came close to a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Kenyon Giles added 14 points.

West Virginia State capitalized on their defensive intensity, converting Frostburg's 15 turnovers into 23 points. Nate Mims contributed 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Arthur Cox and Jaden Byers chipped in 10 and 13 points, respectively. However, WVSU also struggled with ball security, committing 18 turnovers that Frostburg turned into 25 points.

Despite being outscored 49-41 in bench points, the Yellow Jackets' balanced scoring and fast-break opportunities (26 points) helped secure the win. Frostburg's Jaden Baker led all scorers with 20 points, but the Bobcats (2-7, 1-3 MEC) couldn't overcome WVSU's advantage in the paint and their timely defense.

West Virginia State will next travel to Wheeling on Wednesday, Dec. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
