Yellow Jackets Sweep Davis & Elkins in Penultimate Home Match

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University (18-9, 12-1 MEC) swept Davis & Elkins College (7-15, 2-11 MEC) in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-18) in their penultimate home volleyball match of the season at the Walker Convocation Center on Friday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets controlled the match from the outset, establishing their dominance early in the first set with a strong .360 hitting percentage. WVSU capitalized on Davis & Elkins' errors while showcasing efficient attacking, highlighted by contributions from Hannah Steele and Baby Moleni. The second set saw WVSU elevate their play even further, hitting an impressive .444 with 15 kills and continuing to apply pressure with their aggressive serving and blocking at the net.

Although Davis & Elkins showed some resistance in the third set, reducing their errors and managing to score 18 points, WVSU's balanced effort on both offense and defense ensured there would be no comeback. Key blocks from Nicole Gartner Custodio and clutch service runs, including aces from McKenna Wiseman, sealed the match in three sets.

Statedominated statistically, recording 32 kills with a .284 hitting percentage and adding 12 service aces and 9 total blocks. Hannah Steele led the offense with 9 kills and a .300 hitting percentage, while also contributing 1 ace and 5 digs. Baby Moleni added 7 kills, 3 blocks, and hit .286 for the match. McKenna Wiseman stood out at the service line with a match-high 5 aces, and setter Kiersten Eggleton orchestrated the attack with 24 assists while adding 4 blocks and 1 ace. Custodio was a defensive anchor at the net with 6 blocks and chipped in 5 kills. Meanwhile, Davis & Elkins struggled offensively, recording 19 kills but finishing with a -.047 hitting percentage due to 23 attack errors.

State returns to the Walker Convocation Center for their final home match of the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
