Yellow Jackets Roll Past Davis & Elkins with 7-Goal Shutout Victory

INSTITUTE, WV – West Virginia State University ended their home slate with a dominant 7-0 victory over Davis & Elkins on Sunday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The win elevated WVSU to 11-3-3 overall and 10-2-2 in Mountain East Conference play, while Davis & Elkins fell to 1-15-1 overall and 0-13-1 in the MEC.

The Yellow Jackets made an immediate impact, scoring three goals in the first six minutes. Kinga Koronkiewicz opened the scoring in the 4th minute, quickly followed by Alba Closa and Ammy Mwasambu in the 6th minute, with assists from both Closa and Koronkiewicz. The early barrage set the tone as WVSU took a 3-0 lead within minutes.

In the second half, WVSU continued to apply pressure, with Avril Amil Ruiz scoring in the 50th minute to extend the lead. Sara París Fílter and Karissa Vela added goals in the 53rd and 64th minutes, respectively, before Paula Gonzalez Castro capped the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute, assisted by Koronkiewicz and Aika Tobaru.

WVSU outshot Davis & Elkins 22-6, with goalkeeper Laura Galindo securing two saves and a clean sheet. Davis & Elkins' goalkeeper Monica Birkelund faced an onslaught, making five saves amid WVSU's relentless attack.

West Virginia State will conclude their regular season with a rivalry match against the University of Charleston on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at the Welch Athletic Complex.
