WILBERFORCE, Ohio — West Virginia State University (3-0, 0-0 MEC) continued its early-season success, earning a decisive 77-63 victory over Central State University (2-1, 1-0 SIAC) on Saturday at Beacom/Lewis Gym.
WVSU jumped out to a commanding 22-7 lead in the first quarter, fueled by a stifling defensive effort that forced 14 turnovers. The Yellow Jackets capitalized with 17 points off turnovers and never looked back.
Shanley Woods led the offensive charge with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while
Emily Anthony contributed 12 points and a game-high five assists.
Latisha Parris and
Baylee Goins each added 11 points, showcasing WVSU's depth with 36 bench points.
On the defensive end, Zakorrah Russell and
Latifat Olatunji anchored the Yellow Jackets with five steals and four blocks, respectively. WVSU's aggressive play resulted in 20 steals overall, disrupting the Marauders' rhythm throughout the contest.
Central State's Zhieyah Rolack shone in a losing effort, scoring a game-high 30 points on an efficient 13-of-16 shooting. However, WVSU's collective effort proved too much, particularly in the paint, where the Yellow Jackets outscored the Marauders 38-34.
Despite a second-half surge by Central State, WVSU maintained control, responding to every rally with timely baskets. The Yellow Jackets' defensive pressure continued to frustrate the Marauders, leading to a total of 34 turnovers.
WVSU has a week off before the MEC hom opener on Saturday, Nov. 23 against Glenville State. The start time for that game was originally scheduled to be 2:00 p.m. but with the MEC Volleyball Tournament being held in the Walker Convocation Center next week, a new time has yet to be announced.
