INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University (4-0, 1-0 MEC) edged Glenville State (4-2, 1-1 MEC) 97-95 in a thrilling Mountain East Conference matchup at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets secured their fourth consecutive win behind a balanced team effort and critical defensive plays.

The Yellow Jackets surged to a 30-22 lead in the first quarter, capitalizing on a dominant transition game. WVSU's quick ball movement and pressure defense generated turnovers, allowing them to score 21 points on fast breaks. Emyah Fortenberry and Zakorrah Russell led the charge, combining for 16 points in the quarter.

Glenville State responded in the second period, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 27-21 to cut the deficit to 51-49 by halftime. Glenville's Nwando Okigbo paced the visitors with sharp shooting, including a three-pointer that sparked an 8-2 run. Despite the push, WVSU's Emily Anthony contributed steady play with key assists and free throws to keep her team ahead.

The third quarter saw Glenville take their first lead of the game after a 14-5 run. The visitors outscored WVSU 21-19, heading into the fourth quarter tied at 70. Fortenberry remained a consistent force in the paint, battling Glenville's aggressive rebounders to keep the game even.

West Virginia State reclaimed control in a high-scoring final frame. Behind clutch baskets from Russell and Fortenberry, and Anthony's steady presence, the Yellow Jackets outscored Glenville 27-25. WVSU sealed the win with defensive stops in the final minute, highlighted by Russell's critical steal and fast-break layup. Fortenberry hit two free throws to secure the two-point margin. Glenville State had several looks in the closing seconds, but couldn't get any of those chances to fall.

Fortenberry led WVSU with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Russell added 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 steals, while Anthony delivered a versatile performance with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists.
