Six different scorers contribute to WVSU's 6-2 victory over Point Park

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (6-2-2, 6-1-1 MEC) surged to a commanding 6-2 victory over Point Park University (2-5-3, 1-4-1) on Wednesday night at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets dominated in front of their home crowd, scoring early and often to secure their sixth win of the season.

The Yellow Jackets set the tone quickly, with Sara París Fílter opening the scoring in the 3rd minute. París Fílter capitalized on a well-timed pass from Sandra Linares to slot the ball into the bottom left corner, giving WVSU a 1-0 lead. Just nine minutes later, Linares doubled the advantage, finding the net unassisted in the 12th minute to extend the lead to 2-0.

Point Park responded in the 25th minute when Jurnee Durrett-Finney, assisted by Mireya Rojas, pulled a goal back to make it 2-1. However, West Virginia State regained momentum before halftime. In the 35th minute, Leila Karam struck for the Yellow Jackets, pushing the lead to 3-1 with a decisive finish after a quick buildup play.

The second half saw WVSU continue its offensive onslaught. Ellise Rennie found the back of the net just 17 seconds after the restart, extending the lead to 4-1. The Yellow Jackets' pressure paid off again in the 47th minute when Alba Closa converted a penalty kick following a foul in the box, putting the match virtually out of reach at 5-1.

Ammy Mwasambu added a sixth goal for WVSU in the 87th minute, with an assist from París Fílter, to cap off the night. Point Park managed a late consolation goal from Vanessa Vazquez in the 89th minute.

WVSU's defense was solid, limiting Point Park to just seven shots, with only four on target. Goalkeeper Laura Galindo made two saves to help secure the win. Offensively, the Yellow Jackets peppered the Pioneers' net with 20 shots, 16 of which were on target.

The Yellow Jackets will aim to carry this momentum into their upcoming road game against West Liberty University on Sunday, October 13, at 1 p.m. The match will take place at West Liberty's West Family Athletic Complex.
