Yellow Jackets sting Bobcats for fifth-straight win

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – It was a back and forth affair inside the Rockefeller Center on the West Virginia Wesleyan campus through the first 13 minutes of the contest, but West Virginia State took the lead with just over seven minutes to play in the second and never relinquished the lead again enroute to an 87-76 victory over the Bobcats.

WVSU gets their 10th win of the season, advancing their record to 10-6, 6-3 in the Mountain East Conference. WVWC falls to 2-11, 0-9 in the MEC.

WVSU now moves into a three-way tie for third place following a loss by Concord and a win by Glenville State. Frostburg State played a non-conference game Saturday which allowed State and Glenville State to move up into a tie with them.

Wesleyan took an early lead of 6-11 following a 7-2 run early in the first quarter. Five points from Ashley Kerekes and a jumper by Destiny Fields gave WVSU their first lead of the game mid-way through the frame. A pair of free throws by Hallie Bailey and a run-out trey by Shanley Woods gave State a 25-21 lead after 10 minutes.

The lead was short lived as Welseyan opened the second with eight straight, taking the one point lead, 28-25. A fast-break opportunity was hampered by a Wesleyan foul and Bailey converted both foul shots. On the ensuing possession, Wesleyan couldn't get out of their back court, turning the rock back over to the Yellow Jackets. ZZ Russell missed her trey opportunity keeping the Wesleyan lead at a point, 28-27. Emyah Fortenberry came through on the next possession, hitting a layup and giving State the lead for good. Wesleyan tied it twice, but never regained the lead and WVSU closed the half on a 13-4 run, giving them a 44-35 lead at the break.

Fortenberry canned a pair of free throws to open the third quarter and extend the lead to double-digits. The Bobcats kept the lead hovering around the 11 point mark for the first half of the quarter, but State strung another 13-4 run over a two minute span, 68-47. Wesleyan scored eight of the final 10 points of the quarter, including a and-one to trim it down to 72-58 after 30 minutes of play.

The two teams went back and forth through much of the fourth quarter. Destiny Fields hit State's final field goal of the game with just under four minutes to play and Wesleyan hit their final one with 2:43 to play. The Bobcats hit two pairs of free throws and Hannah Shriver canned a pair herself to give the game its final score.

Fields scored 16 points for the Yellow Jackets, hitting seven field goals, both season highs for the graduate student. Harmeyer scored 15 points, gathering a pair of rebounds and a pair of steals. Kerekes and Fortenberry each scored 10 points. Fortenberry grabbed six boards while Kerekes grabbed four.

Emma Witt led the Bobcats with 15 points.

WVSU welcomes in Glenville State to the Walker Convocation Center on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for a 5:30 pm showdown.
