Harmeyer hits 1000th career point as WVSU’s comeback bid falls short

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State trailed by as much as 15 points in the opening moments of the fourth quarter then put together a 22-8 run to claw back, but ultimately fell short as WVSU fell to Glenville State 98-92 inside the Walker Convocation Center Wednesday night. It was the first loss for the Yellow Jackets on the home hardwood in seven weeks.

WVSU falls to 10-7 on the season, 6-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Glenville State takes sole possession of third place in the league and advances their record to 13-4, 7-3 in the MEC.

Shelby Harmeyer scored her 1000th career point in the game and led all Yellow Jackets with a season high 26 points and seven rebounds. Anysa Jordan added 21 points and nine boards while ZZ Russell and Emyah Fortenberry contributed 16 and 11 points respectively. WVSU struggled under time pressure, accruing two shot clock violations and three 10 second backcourt violations.

Glenville State's Hya Haywood led all scorers with 30 points.

Right off the tip, Glenville hit a trey giving them the lead five seconds into the game. WVSU closed the gap several times in the period to a single point, but GSU responded each time. After the under five media timeout, State again closed to a point, 9-8, but the Pioneers closed the quarter on a 10-3 run, giving them a 19-11 lead at the end of the first.

That run extended to 15-3 until Harmeyer canned her first trey of the game at the 7:42 mark of the second. Harmeyer hit another one four minutes late to close to three points, 33-30 but Glenville State closed the half on a 10-5 run, mostly layups, to take a 43-35 lead into the locker room. Each team scored 24 points in the frame.

Glenville State gained a point on the Yellow Jackets through the first two minutes of the third. Harmeyer, Jordan, and Destiny Fields each hit layups, a trey and a pair of layups from Glenville State increased the lead to nine points, 50-41. The Pioneers' lead eventually hit 13 points several times during the quarter and the was the margin after the third quarter, 72-59.

Glenville State's largest lead of the contest came right after the fourth quarter began, a layup to make it 74-59. A quick timeout form Charles Marshall, the first of the half, came right after Fortenberry went 1-of-2 from the free throw line. With 7:34 to play in the fourth quarter, Harmeyer lined up and stroked the 1000th point of her career, bringing the Glenville State lead down to 79-68. State outscored the Pioneers 22-11 over the next six minutes to tie the game up at 90-all with 1:44 to play. Only Imani Reid scored after that point, a layup in the paint, meanwhile Glenville State hit 5-of-8 free throws and a trey over that same span, to take the game 98-92.

West Virginia State will next head to cross-county rival Charleston on Saturday, Jan. 27 for a 2:00 p.m. showdown in the Women's Kanawha River Classic.
