WVSU passes home court defense act in 101-36 decision over Senators

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Wednesday's women's basketball game against the Davis & Elkins Senators was initially in doubt of being played thanks to the winter storm that blanketed the area earlier in the week, but once the two teams hit the hardwood the result wasn't in doubt for long as WVSU led wire-to-wire in a 101-36 victory over the Senators in the Walker Convocation Center.

West Virginia State has now won four straight and they move into a three-way-tie for the fourth best conference record in the Mountain East with Glenville State and Concord. The Yellow Jackets are now 9-6, 5-3 in the MEC. Davis & Elkins falls to 2-11, 1-7 in conference play.

Four Yellow Jackets were in double figures with ZZ Russell leading the attack with 17 points, three boards and an assist. She was 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Anysa Jordan and Shanley Woods each contributed 14 points. Jordan was 5-of-7 from the field and hit both of her long range shot attempts. She also gathered six rebounds, had two blocks and two steals. Woods went 4-of-6 from three point land and had five assists. Ashley Kerekes was the final Yellow Jacket in double figures with 13. She hit six field goals and a foul shot and gathered four rebounds.

Taylor Smith paced the Senators with 10 points.

WVSU hit their first bucket at the 9:17 mark, a layup from Emyah Fortenberry. With State leading 5-2 with just over six minutes left in the first quarter, they put together a 10-0 run with Hannah Shriver hitting five, Woods hitting a trey and Jordan hitting a hook shot in the paint. D&E scored to break the streak but State closed the period on a 5-0 run, 20-4.

D&E scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but a 16-0 run by State put WVSU up by 30 points, 36-6. The Senators then scored five straight points, all by Madison Butler. WVSU closed quarter number two on a 9-2 run with Russell hitting three treys, her final points of the game and State was up big at halftime, 45-13.

D&E hit a pullup jumper with just under seven minutes to play in the third quarter, trimming the lead to 50-17. WVSU then hit their stride and scored 26 unanswered points on the back of 10-of-17 shooting during the stretch, forcing seven turnovers and hitting 4-of-8 treys. A layup by the Senators quenched the six minute scoring drought, but by then WVSU was up by nearly 60 points, 76-17. The Senators scored six of the final eight points in the frame to only be down 78-23 after the third.

WVSU scored the first 16 points of the quarter, stretching all the way to the 4:57 mark of the quarter. The lead was 94-23. After the final media timeout of the game, head coach Charles Marshall put his subs in and WVSU cruised to a 101-36 win over D&E.

WVSU heads to Buckhannon, W.Va. to take on the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
