Women’s Basketball shoots perfect from the free throw line enroute to 75-62 win over Salem

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's basketball team used 13-of-13 shooting from the foul line to propel themselves to a 75-62 victory over the Salem Tigers on Saturday afternoon inside the Walker Convocation Center.

WVSU advances to 8-6 on the season and remains 4-3 in the Mountain East following the non-conference matchup. Salem falls to 3-11.

Anysa Jordan scored 16 for the Yellow Jackets and was a single board shy of a double-double. She ended the night with nine rebounds. ZZ Russell canned a pair of triples in her 12 point effort to go with four rebounds, four assists, and a trio of steals. Hannah Shriver grabbed 10 boards with her seven points.

Salem's Elina Pericic led all scorers with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Ashley Kerekes got the scoring started for the Yellow Jackets with a layup following a Salem turnover 41 seconds into the contest. Jordan hit a jumper a couple of minutes later to take a 4-2 lead. The Yellow Jacket offense went cold for the next four-plus minutes, allowing Salem to get nine straight points, 11-4. WVSU closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to retake the lead, capped with a layup by Jordan with 00.2 seconds showing on the clock.

The run continued into the second quarter with a pair of Jordan foul shots. Salem hit a jumper just outside the paint to end the run. Russell scored a floater from inside the paint and a Kerekes layup to extend the lead to 21-15 with 7:40 to play in the half. That started another Yellow Jacket run that contained a pair of Jordan foul shots and two straight long-range bombs from Ashley Davis, giving State a 29-17 lead with 5:56 to play in the half and forcing a Salem timeout. WVSU's only other field goal of the quarter was a Hannah Shriver trey, allowing the Tigers to close the gap and go on a 12-3 run of their own. State led 32-29 at the halftime break.

WVSU opened the second half on a 14-2 run over the first six minutes of the quarter with an Emyah Fortenberry layup, a Shelby Harmeyer trey, a pair of free throws from Shriver, and a pair of Imani Reid layups bookending a triple from Russell. WVSU held a 46-32 lead when the dust settled with just over four minutes left in the quarter. Salem broke a streak just before the under five media timeout with a trey, 46-35. WVSU came out of the timeout and hit the gas going on another run, this one 12-2. Salem hit a floater with a little over 30 seconds to play to snap the run giving State a 58-39 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

WVSU stretched their lead to 20 points twice in the fourth quarter. The first time after a Harmeyer trey, and the second on the back of a Hallee Bailey jumper from just outside the paint. Salem attempted to get the lead back down to a manageable amount, but couldn't get any closer than 11 points. Jordan hit a layup with 33 seconds to play to re-extend the lead back to 13 points. A Salem turnover and Latifat Olatunji steal allowed WVSU to run out the clock.

WVSU returns to conference play with a mid-week matchup against the Davis & Elkins Senators on Wednesday inside the Walker Convocation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
