Women’s Basketball cruises to 82-56 victory over NDC

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – West Virginia State traveled to Murphy Gymnasium Wednesday night and defeated the Notre Dame College Falcons by a final tally of 82-56. WVSU shot 50 percent or better from beyond the arc in three out of four quarters and shot 45.5 percent from three point range for the game, making 15 threes.

WVSU has now taken the last three straight games against the Falcons, four out of the last five.

State improves to 7-6, 4-3 in the MEC. NDC falls to 4-9, 2-5 in the conference.

WVSU jumped out in front 5-0 early with Hallie Bailey hitting a fastbreak jumper and Hannah Shriver canning a shot from long range, forcing NDC to call a timeout two minutes into the contest. NDC finally got on the board shortly after. Ashley Kerekes drained a fastbreak pullup shot from beyond the arc right before Shelby Harmeyer hit a heat-check trey, her third of the quarter. WVSU closed the frame on an 8-2 run, 24-15.

State didn't hit their first basket of the second quarter until almost five minutes in, a Destiny Fields trey at the 5:43 mark. Fields added a fastbreak layup on the next possession, followed by a Bailey layup at 3:37, a triple from Harmeyer 30 seconds later, and a long-range jumper from Fields rounded out the second quarter scoring, giving State a 37-29 lead at the break.

NDC started the second half on a 6-2 run, cutting the WVSU lead down to four points, 39-35. WVSU's defense ramped up over the last six minutes of the quarter, allowing State to go on a 19-5 run. State hit 8-of-10 foul shots and 7-of-14 field goals in the quarter and they took a commanding 61-43 lead heading into the final ten minutes of play.

WVSU's run extended another five points before an NDC layup at 8:16 broke the run. The Falcons went on a 10-0 run of their own to shave the WVSU lead to 66-53 with 6:33 to play. A triple by Imani Reid at 6:19 got the Yellow Jackets back on track. NDC hit their final field goal of the game with 5:51 to play. State then strung together a 13-1 run to close the game with a triple by Kerekes and Shanley Woods. A pair of free throws from Harmeyer, another trey from Bailey and a jumper from Emily Anthony closed the Yellow Jackets scoring. A late foul shot by the Falcons gave the game its final score.

WVSU held the lead for all but the first 52 seconds when the score was 0-0. Harmeyer led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, all threes, and gathered three defensive boards. Bailey scored 12 points and picked up four assists, a block, and a pair of steals. Emyah Fortenberry picked up her first double-double since Dec. 2 against Frostburg State. She ended with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Kerekes scored 10 points and had eight boards.

State returns home for a non-conference contest against the Salem Tigers on Saturday, January 13 at 2 pm inside the Walker Convocation Center.
