Yellow Jackets veto Senators by 3-0 decision

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – WVSU's volleyball team rode a .330 hitting percentage and held Davis & Elkins to a .062 attack percentage to take the first meeting between the teams this season in  Friday night's MEC South showdown. State used eight blocks and 40 kills to take the match in three sets. The Yellow Jackets have now won 10 straight matches, and have won nine straight in straight sets, dating back to September 9th.

West Virginia State remains atop the MEC South with a 12-3 overall record, 3-0 in the Mountain East. Davis & Elkins drops to 1-13, 0-2 in the conference.

Baby Moleni racked up 10 kills on the night and three blocks. Jacklyn Simms and Kaitlyn Cabral each had eight kills. Cabral also added three blocks.

Set one was never in doubt. State opened the set with a block by Moleni and Natalie Beer to take the lead, D&E tied it up, State then ripped off a 15-3 run to take a 16-4 lead in the set. Simms had three kills in the stretch, while Cabral and Valencia Wilder added two each. State cruised the rest of the way to take the set 25-12.

Set two saw the Senators take their first lead of the match off of a Brianna Portley block, but State eventually got hot again, going on a 17-6 run with Cabral taking four slams, and Hannah Steele adding three kills of her own. D&E went on a short 3-0 run but State grabbed the last two points with Moleni putting the exclamation point on the set two win.

Set three saw D&E grab a 4-1 lead, forcing a Hillary Hurley timeout. The Senators went on a 5-0 run a few points later to take their largest lead of the match at seven points, 11-4. The Jackets then took advantage of some timely Senator errors on an 8-1 run to tie the set up at 12-all. Simms had the only kill in the stretch and Cabral added a service ace. The set went back and forth for a few points, but an emphatic Moleni slam tied the set back up at 17-all, starting a 5-0 runs for State in which they grabbed the lead and never relinquished it. State took four of the next six points to take set three, 25-20, and the match.

WVSU will travel to Gilmer County to do battle with the Glenville State Pioneers on Tuesday, Oct. 3. First serve inside the Waco Center is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
