State earns 11th straight victory through Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's volleyball team (13-3, 4-0 MEC) took down the Pioneers of Glenville State University (7-9, 2-2 MEC) in a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday inside the Waco Center. WVSU's convincing win was their 11th consecutive and 10th straight 3-0 decision.

Kaitlyn Cabral led the offense for State with 13 kills and eight digs. Jacklyn Simms earned her first collegiate double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Alex Darby led the back-line with 16 digs. WVSU hit 48 kills in the match and hit .370.

The WVSU defense held Glenville State to a .075 hitting percentage, the third consecutive match in which a team hit under .100 against the Yellow Jackets.

State took the lead right out of the gate with a Kiersten Eggleton service ace in the first set and opened up with an 11-1 run with help from three kills and two block assists by Natalie Beer. Later in the set, State went on another 4-0 run with Jacklin Simms gathering three kills. State later won set one 25-13 with Cabral flying high above the net to kill the set.

Glenville State took the lead with a kill from Rita Kelly, but a Simms kill negated the lead immediately, then a Pioneer setting error gave State the lead back, a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the match. At 9-7, State rattled off a 4-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Late in the set with State leading 18-12, Cabral and Wilder each hit two slams, an Eggleton kill and two service aces by Ashlynne Davis secured set number two, ending with a 7-0 run.

Eggleton started with the serve for State in set three, and put State up with an 8-0 run. The teams traded points for a little while, but State took five of the last six points capped by a Glenville attack error, winning the final set 25-10 and capturing their 10th straight 3-0 victory. Diamond'nique Young, Simms and Cabral all had five kills in the final set. West Virginia State hit .447 in the set.

State returns home to host the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan in the Walker Convocation Center on Friday, Oct. 6. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
