Three players get double-figure kills in sweep of WV Wesleyan

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's volleyball program defeated their 12th straight opponent Friday night inside the Walker Convocation Center when they swept the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, 3-0. It was their 11th straight sweep and State has now won their last 34 consecutive sets, dating back to Sept. 8th when State won the first, second and fourth sets in a 3-1 win over the University of Mount Olive.

Three Yellow Jackets hit double-digit kills led by Diamond'Nique Young who had 13. Kaitlyn Cabral and Jacklyn Simms both had 11 slams on the night. Defensively, State held their fourth straight opponent to a sub-.100 hitting percentage, aided by four blocks and Alex Darby's 10 digs. Young was in all four blocks with Valencia Wilder and Natalie Beer each splitting the block assist duties with Young.

State started the match with a 5-0 run, later turning into a 8-1 run with kills by Cabral, Simms and Young and a block by Beer and Young. Wesleyan went on a bit of a spurt in the set, taking a 6-0 run into a State timeout. Cabral slammed the next point, ending the run. Ashlynne Davis got a service ace at set point to take State's 32nd straight set. Young had seven of her kills and two blocks in the first set. Both of the blocks were assisted by Beer.

The second set saw a slow start for the home team with Wesleyan taking a 5-2 lead early. A Simms slam was the only offense to this point in the set for the Jackets. A Cabral slam gave State's Darby the opportunity to serve where she rattled off nine straight points to take an 11-5 lead, including three service aces. Three rotations later, Wilder stepped to the service line and tacked on seven more, halted only by a service error. It was 21-10 in the set and State scored four of the next five points, sealed by a Ryleigh Clayborn kill.

The third set was all WVSU, and they took the lead on the first point and never gave it up. Davis served six straight and Darby served eight straight, cruising to a 25-9 set three win. State didn't commit a single error on any side of the ball in the third set, with 17 kills on 27 attacks and was a perfect 9-for-9 on their sideout attempts. Everyone who entered the set in the third got a kill, except for the two backline specialists: Darby and Davis. Young had six kills in the set, Cabral had four, Simms had two and Eggleton, Hannah Steele, Clayborn, Wilder, and Beer all had a kill.

State will head to their cross-county rival on Tuesday, Oct. 10 for a 7 pm contest against the University of Charleston. UC currently sits second in the MEC south after defeating Glenville State 3-1 on Friday.
