CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State's 12 match winning streak came to an end on Tuesday night as the Yellow Jackets fell in four sets, 3-1.

Set one started rough as UC scored a service ace right out of the gate, then followed that up with two more points to take the three-to-love lead. State then went on a tear with a 9-2 run thanks to four kills from the arm of Jacklyn Simms. State struggled for the rest of the set, getting outscored by UC 17-6 to trail UC by a 22-15. The Jackets scored five of the next six points, but the deficit proved too much and UC took set one, 25-20.

The set one loss broke a streak of 34-straight sets won by WVSU and ended the WVSU sweep streak at 11.

WVSU bounced back in the second set. Both teams split the first two points, but State then tallied 10 points to UC's three with three kills by Diamond'nique Young. The lead eventually ballooned to eight points with another Young kill at 19-11. UC scored seven points in a stretch, but State scored six to hit the 25 point goal and take the second set.

State improved their hitting percentage in the second set up to .375 with 16 kills.

The third set was the closest of the first three sets with six ties through the set as late as 18-all. State could only score three more times in the set, to fall behind two sets to one. Simms had four slams in the set while Valencia Wilder had two. WVSU only had nine kills in the set.

State held a lead through the early stages of the fourth set, but UC took the lead at 14-14 and kept it through the rest of the match, although WVSU did make the Golden Eagles nervous when they tied the set at 23-23. A UC kill and a service ace capped off the match for the Golden Eagles.

WVSU will head to the northern division and play a match against the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons on Friday night.
