WVSU Volleyball opens home schedule with a pair of sweeps against Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State volleyball (8-3, 0-0 MEC) returned to the Walker Convocation Center for the first time in 2023 and swept the Virginia State Trojans (1-6, 0-0 CIAA) twice. State hit 95 kills between the two matches.

WVSU has now won six straight matches, five straight by 3-0 sweeps.

Match 1: WVSU 3, VSU 0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-18)
The Yellow Jackets and Trojans split the first eight points of the first set, but three of the VSU points came by way of WVSU attack errors. Four straight Yellow Jacket points put them in the lead for good, courtesy of  a kill by DIamond'nique Young, a kill by Valencia Wilder, a block by Wilder and Young, and a VSU ball handling error. A handful of traded points later, the Yellow Jackets went on another 4-0 run thanks to a kill by Young, two kills by Kaitlyn Cabral and an Alex Darby service ace. A Wilder slam secured the set for WVSU.

Young had five slams in the set. Darby came up with 10 digs. WVSU hit .324 in the set while the Trojans hit .097.

Set two was the closest set in the match featuring four lead changes, all of them early in the set. WVSU was able to take the lead for good at 7-6 with a Cabral service ace. Virginia State was able to cut the lead with a 4-0 run and came as close as one point, 14-13. A Young kill slammed the door on the comeback attempt and State went on a 4-0 run of their own. The Trojans tied the match late at 20-20 but a 5-1 run to close the set with three Young slams gave the Jackets a two sets lead.

Young slammed five more kills to lead the Jackets offense. WVSU hit a paltry .100 in the set, but VSU hit .081 to bail out the Jackets.

Set three was tied at 10-all but four straight points in the set put the Jackets up 13-10, forcing a Virginia State timeout. A Jacket 6-1 run put them up big and West Virginia State finished the set with a Natalie Beer kill to seal the sweep. WVSU's hitting percentage jumped to a .310 on set three, while Virginia State hit .179, their best of the match.

Young finished the match with 13 kills and three blocks while Darby finished with 14 digs.

Match 2: WVSU 3, VSU 0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-17)
Simms started the match with three straight kills before VSU got on the scoreboard then tacked on one more after VSU scored a service ace and a kill, 4-2. Later in the set with Davis serving, WVSU ripped off four straight with two Cabral kills, a dump by Kiersten Eggleton, and a slam from Wilder, starting an 14-4 run for the Yellow Jackets. VSU tried to get back in the set, but the deficit was too much and a Young kill put the exclamation mark on set one. WVSU hit .429 in the set. VSU hit sub-.100 for the third set of the day at .091. Simms had six kills and Young had four.

Set two proved to be the closest once again, and the only set of the match with any ties or lead changes. A Young slam gave WVSU a 14-11 lead, but a VSU kill and three straight Yellow Jacket attack errors gave VSU their first lead in the set since 5-4.A Young slam tied the match back up at 15-all. The Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start set three with Eggleton hitting a service ace on the first serve of the set and Simms added two more slams. A few traded points later, Peri Martin subbed in and went to the service line, and hit an ace on her first serve. A VSU attack error forced a timeout by the Trojans. Wilder then slammed two floaters to the Trojan side of the court, doubling the Trojans at 18-9. Each team scored thrice before Virginia State made a rally attempt, scoring five straight but a service error put WVSU back on the service line at 22-16. Kills by Beer and Young gave WVSU match point and a VSU attack error locked up the double sweep.

Wilder and Beer each had four kills in the set.
