WVSU Volleyball earns sixth straight sweep with win over Central State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State held Central State to a sub-zero hitting percentage thanks to a dominant second set where they held the Marauders to a -.368 and earned their seventh straight win on the season, the sixth straight match won by a 3-0 tally.

WVSU improves to 9-3 on the season. Central State falls to 1-13, 1-0 in the SIAC.

The teams traded points all the way to a seven-all score. An unassisted Valencia Wilder slam gave State the lead and started a 5--0 run for State. Kiersten Eggleton earned a kill when a blocker hit the net, a Wilder ace, and two straight Central State attack errors gave State a 12-7 lead. Jacklyn Simms ended the set with her third slam of the set. Diamond'nique Young slammed four kills while Simms and Wilder each had three kills.

Natalie Beer had her second kill of the match with the scoreboard reading 4-3, but then it was all Jackets as State went on a 21-2 run to finish off set two. That included a 12-0 run with Darby at the service line. State's defense only allowed the Marauders to get two kills in the set on 19 total attack attempts, holding the Marauders to a -.368 hitting percentage. Baby Moleni had five kills. Beer had three blocks, most with front-line-mate Young who had two of her own.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair through the first 22 points. With 10 ties through all the way up to 11-all. State again took control of the set with two straight blocks by the duo of Moleni and Alyssa Hill. Central State looked to make it interesting with the set at 16-15 in favor of WVSU, but the Jackets finished up on a 9-2 run to take the set three win, 25-17, and the match.

State opens up conference play on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 pm, as they host the defending MEC champions, the Wheeling University Cardinals.
