Volleyball downs Central State with .523 hitting percentage

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – West Virginia State's volleyball team (6-3, 0-0 MEC) traveled to Central State University (1-10, 1-0 SIAC) on Tuesday and defeated the Marauders in straight sets. State never trailed in any of the three sets and never hit less than .500 in the match.

Jacklyn Simms nearly matched her career high for kills in the match, tallying 16 slams on the day to go with nine digs and a block assist. She hit an impressive .762 clip for the match and didn't commit an attack error. Diamond'nique Young tallied 11 kills and a block, hitting .529 in the match. Alex Darby dug out 13 Central State attacks.

Simms opened the match with three straight kills, giving State a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the set. Another Simms kill gave WVSU an 11-5 lead, forcing a Central State timeout. The Marauders would get as close as two points at 20-18, but State would close the set on a kill each from Simms, Larissa Lehtoranta, and Young, and a service ace from Kiersten Eggleton. Simms ended the set with eight kills in the set. State hit an impressive .500 clip in the set one victory.

Simms once again got the scoring started for the Yellow Jackets in the second set, putting away three of the first four Yellow Jacket points. Two attack errors by Central State and a Lehtoranta service ace gave State a 8-4 lead. A kill by Young later in the set, a Kaitlyn Cabral kill, and a CSU attack error forced a timeout by the Mauraders to try and regroup. Another Lehtoranta service ace and kills by Young and Cabral, however, gave State the set two victory.

The third set was all Yellow Jackets. While leading 4-3, Valencia Wilder slammed a ball to the court, kicking off a massive run for WVSU. Seven straight kills from the Jackets that included three from Silder, three from Baby Moleni, and one from Simms. That 7-0 run was cut off by a WVSU service error, but on the next point, Moleni slammed another ball that kicked off an 8-0 run. When the dust settled, State led 20-5. Four straight Central State attack errors gave State match point and a kill from Hannah Steele was the proverbial nail in the coffin. The Yellow Jackets hit .556 in the set and held Central State to a sub-zero hitting percentage.

State opens up their home schedule on Saturday, September 16 when they host the Virginia State Trojans for a rare twinbill beginning at 11 am.
