BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Virginia State University Athletics placed fifth in the 2022-23 Mountain East Conference Commissioner's Cup, the league's annual award that recognizes overall athletic excellence among its membership. This marked the third-consecutive year that WVSU ranked in the top five of the MEC Commissioner's Cup standings.

The Commissioner's Cup standings are compiled utilizing an "all-sports rating." This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution). A bonus point is given for winning the conference tournament (in applicable sports).

West Virginia State earned a .61574 rating with 10 MEC sponsored sports competing during the 2022-23 season. The .61574 all-sports rating was the highest ever for WVSU since joining the league in its inaugural 2013-14 season. The Yellow Jackets posted winning records in seven sports, qualified for six MEC postseason tournaments, and advanced to three NCAA regional tournaments this season.

State trailed fourth-placed Frostburg (.64286) and third-placed Fairmont (.65224) closely in this year's standings. West Liberty edged the Bobcats and the Falcons for second place with a .68020 rating. Charleston was the clear front runner with a .93617 rating. None of the member institutions placed below WVSU earned a .60000 all-sports rating or above.

West Virginia State will be competing in six more MEC sponsored sports next year with the additions of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor track & field, and men's and women's outdoor track & field.
