PREVIEW: 2023 MEC Baseball Tournament

5/9/2023 12:19:00 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State qualified for the 2023 Mountain East Conference Baseball Tournament, presented by YES Chevrolet and YES Ford, as the No. 3 seed in the South Division following the completion of the league's regular season schedule over the weekend. The tournament will be played from May 10-14 at GoMart Ballpark.

Tickets for the 2023 MEC Baseball Tournament went on sale Monday morning and are available for purchase online (CLICK HERE). A tournament all-session pass is available for $45 and includes tickets to all tournament games played at GoMart Ballpark. Individual day tickets are also available and are priced at $11 for adults and $5 for students (college and youth students included). All tickets are general admission.

The top three teams from each division qualify for the tournament and a six-team, double-elimination bracket will be used during tournament play. All games will consist of nine innings. The tournament bracket can be viewed here.

The tournament begins on Wednesday, May 10 with the first two games of the opening round. The No. 1 seed in the South, Charleston, will play the No. 3 seed in the North Division, West Liberty, at 3:30 p.m. in the first game of the day. West Virginia State will then play the No. 1 seed in the North, Frostburg State, at 6:30 p.m. in the second game.

The No. 2 seeds from both divisions, Wheeling and Concord, will play each other at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The losers of Wednesday's games will also play on May 11 at 2 p.m. in the first elimination game of the tournament.

Schedule updates and additional tournament information will be posted to the Mountain East Conference's Championship Central page.

West Virginia State and Frostburg State split a doubleheader when the teams last played in late March of this season. The Bobcats went up by a run, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth of the first game and held on to win it. In the second game of the twinbill, the Yellow Jackets cruised to victory, 6-2, with southpaw Chase Norris shutting out Frostburg through six innings.

WVSU narrowly missed the MEC Tournament last year, but won it all the year prior. In 2021, State lost its first game of the tournament before advancing to the championship on Sunday and beating Concord twice to win it.
