WVSU wraps up regular season on a high note

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (28-20, 22-10 MEC) split a doubleheader with Charleston (39-9, 27-5 MEC) on Saturday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets were downed, 7-0, in the first game before they prevented a series sweep by UC with an 11-6 win in the second game.

Pitcher Foster Conis and right fielder Michael Stone were honored before they played their final games in front of a home crowd. Both players were contributing members of the 2021 West Virginia State squad that won a Mountain East Conference Championship.

Game 1: Charleston 7, West Virginia State 0, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets faced a tough starting pitcher in Dane Sykes. He only gave up three hits in the first game of the afternoon. Left fielder Ryan Kay went 2-for-3 with two singles. Meanwhile, shortstop Kyle Waters picked up the only extra base hit for State with a double in his first at bat.

WVSU came closest to scoring in the bottom of the fifth. An error, a wild pitch on a swinging strikeout and a single down the right field line loaded the bases with two outs. A fielder's choice then brought the inning to a close.

Starting pitcher Colin Bryant held the Golden Eagles to two runs through 4.2 innings. A three-run homer was launched by Charleston before the third out of the top of the fifth to make the scoreline more lopsided, 5-0.

In the top of the seventh, a solo shot and an RBI-double gave the game its final score, 7-0.

Game 2: West Virginia State 11, Charleston 6, Final/7

The second game started badly for State. A double to the gap in right center nearly scored two runs for UC in the top of the first. The runner on second base scored easily, 1-0, before Michael Stone relayed a throw to Mike Huber who nailed the runner from first base at home plate. A two-run dinger followed that put the Yellow Jackets down by three runs, 3-0.

WVSU responded immediately in the bottom of the first. Huber drove in Kay from second base with a double to left center, 3-1. Then with the bases juiced and two outs, Nathan Paulsen doubled down the left field line to clear the bases, 4-3. Michael Bittinger added another run by bringing Paulsen around with a single up the middle, 5-3.

A solo home run by the Golden Eagles in the top of the second cut the lead to one run, 5-4.

In the bottom of the second, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead by tacking on two more runs. Connor Fizer doubled to right center to score Waters from second, 6-4. Then with the bases juiced again, another run was able to score when Charleston's first baseman made a fielding error, 7-4.

After a scoreless third inning, Charleston cut the lead to one run again with a two-run round tripper, 7-6.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fifth. Two Yellow Jackets reached home plate on a wild throwing error by the third baseman, 9-6, before Stone drove in two more runs with a single up the middle, 11-6.

Starter Nick Loftis retired the side in order in the top of the sixth. He struck out the final two batters of the half inning. Foster Conis relieved him in the top of the seventh and ended the game with a double play ball.
