State to face UC in elimination game tomorrow after defeat to Frostburg

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (28-21) was defeated by Frostburg State (31-18) by a final score of 4-0 on Wednesday night at GoMart Ballpark. The Yellow Jackets will play an elimination game tomorrow at 2 p.m. against rivals Charleston. UC was defeated by West Liberty, 11-8, in the first game of the MEC Tournament.

All-MEC first teamer Tyler Lafferty got the start for WVSU and lasted the full eight innings. He struck out a career-high 10 batters.

The first hit he gave up was a double in the bottom of the second. Shortstop Kyle Waters prevented that runner from going anywhere by throwing him out on a ground ball in the next at bat. No runs were registered by Frostburg in the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Lafferty sat down the last two batters of the inning to keep the game scoreless.

He also made the first two batters whiff in the bottom of the fourth. The bases were loaded soon after with a pair of walks and a single in between. A fly ball was hit to center field next that got lost in the lights of GoMart Ballpark and ended up clearing the bases, 3-0. Lafferty then recorded his seventh strike out of the game to bring the inning to a close.

The Bobcats tacked on another run with a solo shot to start the bottom of the sixth, 4-0.

In the remaining three innings, only Michael Bittinger reached base for WVSU with a single through the right side of the infield.

Michael Stone also collected a base hit in the top of the fifth. Ryan Kay singled in the same half inning, but both players were left stranded. Kay also doubled to left field in the third inning and was the only Yellow Jackets with multiple hits in the contest.
